Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk has been arrested October 22 and charged with driving under the influence after he was found by police asleep in his pickup truck in an Illinois corn field.
According to reports, police in New Lenox, Illinois arrested Fisk, who played for both the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox, after they discovered him passed out in the middle of a rural corn field. New Lenox Deputy Chief Bob Pawlisz said they “received a couple of calls about a vehicle in a field” around 7:20 p.m. on Monday night and when they responded to the calls, they discovered the Hall of Famer and his car in the middle of the field. Pawlisz said the officers who arrived on the scene “had reason to believe he was under the influence.” When the officers arrived at the scene, they reportedly found Fisk behind the wheel of his Ford F-150 seemingly fast asleep. They also found an open vodka bottle in the vehicle. The pickup truck they said had a flat tire and its engine was running. There were no passengers.
The responding police officers took the 64-year-old Fisk into custody on suspicion of a DUI, and also for refusing to take a blood alcohol test. He was taken to the nearby Silver Cross Hospital by local paramedics for an examination. His vehicle was also impounded as a result.
After he was discharged from the hospital, Fisk was formally arrested on misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol and improper lane usage. The baseball celebrity posted a $300 bond at the police station for his provisional release. He is scheduled to appear in court on November 29.
Fisk played 24 years of professional baseball as a catcher with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2000. He played for 11 seasons for the Red Sox in 1969 and then from 1971-1980. Then he played for 13 seasons, from 1981-1993, for the White Sox, where he finished his career. Fisk’s most famous baseball moment came in the 1975 World Series when his 12th-inning homer won Game 6 for Boston. Fisk’s DUI charges happened one day after the 37th anniversary of his miraculous home run in Game 6 of the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, which remains an important part of his legacy.
